Corrosion control on a BAE ship lift facility

Problem

BAE Systems engaged Franmarine to conduct an underwater inspection of their 4000 tonne Ship Lift Facility at Henderson. After our preliminary underwater assessment, several cathodic protection measures were recommended and agreed by BAE in order to maintain and extend the facility’s life expectancy (whole of life protection).

Technical solution

Each of the 400 raker and vertical piles were water blasted (6000 psi) to remove marine biofouling and any corrosion before the Denso Seashield 2000 HD protective coatings system was applied.

Outcome

Five years later, when the facility was again inspected, both the systems remained fully functional and in place, resulting in effective corrosion control.
